The NFL Trading Deadline is today at 3 p.m. Packers time and
there is one casualty of the other 31 teams trying to help themselves (while
Packers General Manager Ted Thompson has spent the last 4 days holed up in his
ivory tower office with his “finger up his ass” (a phrase my father used) in
solid belief his “Do Nothing” way is the only way to lead the Packers to the Super
Bowl) that the Packers could use to save their season while they wait for the indispensible
man to return from injury.
The New England Patriots traded backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo
to the San Francisco
49ers for a 2018 2nd round draft pick. As a result of the trade veteran
quarterback Brian Hoyer was released. I feel he is perfect for the Packers for
many reasons even Ted “Beavis” Thompson and Mike “Butt-Head” McCarthy could
agree with.
First, he wouldn’t cost the Packers one of their precious
draft picks and he will have passed through waivers so he won’t cost more than
the veteran minimum prorated for the remainder of the season. That passes the “Beavis”
test.
Second, while Hoyer has failed as the designated starter he
has excelled as the 2nd string quarterback taking over for an injured or
ineffectual starter. He wouldn’t take any time to get up to speed since he’s
been with 7 teams in his 9 seasons. His pedigree includes 3 years behind Tom
Brady (2009-11), 2 games with Pittsburgh and 2
games with Arizona in 2012, 2 years in Cleveland (2013-14), 1 year in Houston ,
last year in Chicago and this year in San Francisco .
He started 3 games for the Browns in 2013 before tearing an
ACL and was the starter in 2014 for the sad sack Browns throwing 12 TDs and 13
interceptions. He started 9 games for the Texans in 2015 throwing 19 TDs and 7
interceptions while splitting duties with Ryan Mallett. Last year with the
Bears he finally was hitting his stride with 6 TDs and no interceptions and
1,445 yards while completing 67% of his passes, but he broke his arm against
the Packers and the Bears forgot about him and went another way during the
offseason. He signed with the 49rs and started 1st 6 games throwing 4 TDs and 4
interceptions for the sad sack 49ers.
He is a veteran who has shown he can play and with the “Quarterback
Guru” behind him he might be the 2017 version of the 2103 version of Matt
Flynn. Think back to 2013. After Rodgers went down Seneca Wallace took over and
was immediately injured and Scott Tolzien was next man up and he was horrible.
So Flynn was signed as a free agent and saved the season until Rodgers got back
for the final game to knock the Bears out of the playoffs and put the Packers
in. If he is I think that would pass the “Butt-Head” test.
With the coveted and much ballyhooed playoff streak the only
thing CEO Mark “Principal McVicker” Murphy, General Manager “Beavis”, and Head
Coach “Butt-Head” set their seasonal goal on you would think finding a place
keeper to save the season would be more important than developing a young
inexperienced quarterback for some future team since Brett Hundley is NOT going
to replace Aaron Rodgers next season.
I don’t find any downside in signing Hoyer. There are only
positives. Once again, he is cheap to sign, he won’t cost a draft pick and he
is a quick study. What’s not to like. So TT get off your ass and do something
instead of being so stubborn and steeped in your philosophy you can’t see the
forest for the trees. “Beavis” needs to jump on him fast before the Patriots
sign him to replace Garoppolo to backup Brady.
