After Ted
Thompson chose Washington cornerback Kevin
King with the first pick of the second round and North Carolina safety Josh Jones in its
second pick of the second round pick it's now evident that Ted Thompson's 2015
draft was a dismal failure.
Back in
2015 with great fanfare and high platitudes Draft Savant Ted Thompson picked Arizona safety and punt
returner Damarious Randall with the 30th pick of the first round to replace
long-time left cornerback starter Tramon Williams, who was allowed to walk away
in free agency. In addition Thompson let 2011 No. 4 pick cornerback Davon House
walk and basically cut Jarrett Bush, who was always the team's best special
teamer, who was coming off his best season in the field.
Cranking
up the 'Way Back Machine" here's what Thompson said about D-Ran on the day
he was drafted:
1. We feel fortunate we were able to
get him that late.
2. Good ball skills, heady, he's a
good player.
3. For some time now we've had him
pretty high up on our board. The more
you go back and look, he's just a good football player...we took a very good football player and we took
him at a place that was very reasonable
in terms of cost.
4. There wasn't much conversation
when it got to be our pick.
5. Took a few, couple of teams were
wanting to move back up at the end of
the round. Obviously, we didn't do anything...quite frankly, some of the trade proposals to us were a little bit
skewed in the other team's favor.
6. I think he's got really good ball
skills, he's got kind of a knack for catching
the ball. He's capable of punt returns, he's played center field in junior college, which I think is a
marvelous trait to have as a defensive back.
7. It was told to me that he would have
been their best corner, based on what
was told to me (by the Sun Devils' coaches), their defense, the safety play is so important and crucial to the
play of their defense that he had to play
inside.
Casey
Hayward began the 2015 season at left corner, but Randall took over in Week 5
and finished the season as the entrenched starter. His rookie year he had 3 interceptions with 1
returned for a TD and 14 passes defended.
He also had an interception in the playoffs. By all accounts Randall had
a decent rookie season.
However,
last season was a totally different matter. Coach Mike McCarthy talks a lot
about players making that second season jump. Coming off a good rookie season
Randall was expected to bloom into a shutdown corner. But the exact opposite
actually happened.
After
playing very little in the preseason, which was normal for most of the Packers
starters last season, Randall began the season having issues with coverage. In
Week 3 he injured his groin and sat out a game. He came back too soon in Week 5
and missed 5 games after groin surgery. He finished the season with 1 good game
where he had 2 interceptions and another in the playoffs, but he continued to
have coverage issues.
The
2015 second round choice was cornerback Quinten Rollins from Miami of Ohio as
Thompson continued to revamp his secondary.
Here's
what Thompson said about Q:
1. On what he saw in Quinten
Rollins: "Well, you watch him play! You watch
his ball skills, he's really kind of remarkable, it's surprising...he's a pretty natural football player."
2. Do you factor in the abilities of
your position coaches when making picks
(for example Joe Whitt developing Rollins)? "Probably not, not in the draft room at the time. In retrospect, yeah,
Joe's that kind of coach and he can take
them and make them good or make them better or see how they can be better."
Rollins
was a backup for most of his rookie season until Sam Shields got hurt. He
basically started the last five games of the season and the first playoff game
until Shields returned.
Last
year the same thing that happened to Randall happened to Rollins. He bounced in
and out of the starting job dealing with a groin injury, but like Randall he
had trouble with coverage.
Another
2015 acquisition was undrafted rookie free agent cornerback LaDarius Gunter. He
appeared in 8 games his rookie year, but started 15 games last year after
Shields was lost for the season. Gunter started the season as the best cover
man, which in itself is an indictment of Randall and Rollins, but as the season
progressed he was beaten by even ordinary receivers on a consistent basis.
The
drafting of King and Jones with the first 2 picks just 2 years after drafting
Randall and Rollins as the first 2 picks may just dispel the myth of Ted
Thompson as the draft decider.
