In addition there were 5 waived either off IR or with an injury settlement and another 22 that had tryouts with other teams, but didn't make the cut to make the grand total to 85.
When training camp opened last week there with 46 ex-Packers on the rosters of 24 teams leaving just 7 teams without an ex-Packer, including both the teams in Texas. By the end of the second week of camp the ranks had swelled to 49 and going into the Hall of Fame game there are now 52.
Kuuuuuhhhn Will Fit In Nicely In The Big Easy |
The first week of training camp Bruce Gaston, B. J. McBryde and William Campbell signed and this week James Jones, John Kuuuuuuuhhhhn and Rajion Neal have found new teams.
The Last of Bygone Era Matt Hasselbeck With the Colts |
Thirty-one of the 44 ex-Packers were still in the league when camp opened after the retirement of Charles Woodson, Greg Jennings, and the last Ron Wolf drafted player still active Matt Hasselbeck and the release of 10 others (A. J. Hawk, Cullen Jenkins, Matt Flynn, Danny Lanasah, Jamon Meredith, Brad Jones, Thomas Gafford, Billy Cundiff, Jumal Rolle and Gaston).
Before training camp 21 new ex-Packers found spots on the 90-man roster, including 2 of the 14 Packers 2016 unrestricted free agents , CB Craig Hayward and QB Scott Tolzien with the Colts replacing Hasselbeck; 1 of the 2 restricted free agents LB Andy Mulumba with the Chiefs and LB Nate Palmer, who was cut and signed with the Titans.
Of the other 13 Packers free agents 8 were re-signed (Don Barclay, Mason Crosby, Letroy Guion, James Starks, Nick Perry, Lane Taylor, Justin Perillo and Chris Bango); 4 were not (Mike Neal, Andrew Quarless, Sean Richardson and Brett Goode) and are still unsigned; and B. J. Raji retired. In addition Mike Daniels re-signed late last season, so he didn't get to test the free agent waters.
Of the 11 on ex-Packers on the practice squad last season four have found work (Blake Annen, Justin Hamilton, Neal and our favorite whipping boy Brandon Bostick).
Three of the 7 players the Packers have cut have been picked up (Nate Palmer, Jeremy Vujnovich and Dennis Parks) and 3 of the 22 ex-Packers that were cut before the season last year (Giogio Tavecchio, Jarret Boykin, Justin Renfrow) and 1 of the 5 on another team's injured reserve (Josh Allen) have been picked up.
However, the three on another team's injured reserve (Jarius Wynn, Michael Hill and Kevin Hughes), the other 4 that were waived injured by another team (Desmond Bishop, D. J. Williams, Josh Gordy and Chris Harper) and the remaining 19 ex-Packers that were cut before the season are still out of a job.
Desmond Bishop in Happier Times |
Desmond Bishop since leaving the Packers spent 2013 on the Vikings injured reserve; spent two months with the Cardinals in 2014 before being cut; spent 2015 on the 49ers injured reserve; He signed with the Redskins in January, but was released in May after mini-camp. He is now 31 and it seems he is running out of chances.
