The Packers survived its opener at Soldier Field, 31-23, while the Chargers came back from a 21-10 halftime deficit to beat the Lions, 33-28, and the underdog San Francisco 49ers manhandled Adrian Peterson and Vikings, 20-3 Monday night. Can you say, "First place, baby."
Like I said in a previous post there are 30 ex-Packers on the active rosters of 20 teams and while a former ex-Packer did very well in his first game with his (new) team the others were quite ordinary on the whole.
Welcome Back, Jones |
James Jones in his second Packers coming was spectacular catching all four balls thrown his way for two touchdowns. However, our favorite ex-Packer (sorry Brett Favre) Raiders strong safety Charles Woodson (I remembered his first name-remind me to tell that story sometime) was injured in the third year of his second Raider coming suffering a dislocated shoulder with 1:16 left of a 33-13 loss to the Bengals. Before he was hurt he had 3 solo and 2 assisted tackles.
Charles Woodson helped off the field |
Latest news is that in typical Woodson form, he announced he intended to play this Sunday against the Ravens. I think his doctors and coaches have other things in mind for the 38-year old even though if Richard Sherman could play almost an entire game with one arm tied to his side (I still wonder how the greatest play caller in the football today wouldn't target a one-arm man at least once....) who's to say Woodson couldn't do the same thing. However, he is not playing the Packers this week, so maybe that wouldn't work.
Here's how the rest of the ex-Packers did on opening day: (bold = starter)
Charles Johnson (Vikings): wide receiver; 2c-27yds-0TD-18L - Editor's Note: wasn't targeted much with the Mike Wallace becoming Bridgewater's go-to receiver.
Thomas Gafford (Bears): long snapper; no bad snaps: 3-3 (FG), 2-2 (XPT); 1-1 (punts).
Marshall Newhouse (Giants): right tackle; played the entire game without giving up a sack.
Cullen Jenkins (Giants): left defensive end; 1 solo tackle - Editor's Note: Cullen looks a bit fat.
With a little help from Allen Barbre |
Allen Barbre (Eagles): left guard; played entire game without giving up a sack - Editor's Note: pushed Ryan Matthews into the end zone for a touchdown.
Brad Jones (Eagles): 2nd team left outside linebacker (he had previously been listed as third team); no tackles.
