Pre-Draft Analysis

The roster former General Manager Ted Thompson left the new guy left a lot to be desired if the Green Bay Packers are to return to the Super Bowl while Aaron Rodgers is the quarterback.

The “Tedders”, who worshipped Ted Thompson and the local kiss ass media who are just as delusional still can’t see the forest for the trees and for some delusional reason think the return of Aaron Rodgers is the only thing that needs to be done this season to return to Super Bowl contention.

I hate to break your bubble (actually I love to break your bubble) the Packers haven’t been in the Super Bowl for the last seven years when Rodgers was the best quarterback in football and Jordy Nelson was one of the best wide receivers, Eddie Lacy was one of the best backs, Clay Matthews was the best pass rusher, Tramon Williams and Sam Shields were the cornerbacks, Ha Ha Clinton-Dix was an up-and-comer and Josh Sitton and T. J. Lang were the Pro Bowl guards.

None of that except for Rodgers is still happening, but what is is that Ted Thompson and his cheap-ass ways turned a budding Super Bowl dynasty into the “Just Good Enough” Packers built around failed top draft picks and undrafted free agents. Ted Thompson and his enablers have wasted the prime years of the best quarterback in the game and will never see another Super Bowl unless the current management cuts the ties to Thompson and takes some chances.

Tonight the 2018 draft begins and the Packers hold the 14th pick and a total of 12 picks. The Packers have many, too many, holes in the roster with offensive line and wide receiver the top needs on offense and edge rushers, cover cornerbacks, cover safeties, cover inside linebackers, run shopping inside linebackers, run stopping safeties and run stopping defensive linemen on defense.

On the plus side the Packers have Aaron Rodgers, Jamal Williams, Aaron Jones, Jimmy Graham, David Bakhtiari, Mike Daniels and Kenny Clark. That is not a lot to show for after 13 years of the “best talent coordinator in the history of the game” Ted Thompson. Despite what the “Tedders” and the local kiss ass media would like you to believe Ted Thompson's incompetence has left the Packers cupboard almost bare.

Here’s what I would do. I would trade up to get the top cornerback in the draft. I would then draft a pass rusher followed by a guard and/or tackle, then an inside linebacker, a wide receiver, a safety, and another offensive lineman. However, if a trade up is not in the works then I would keep No. 14 and take the best available talent regardless of position because the Packers need help at all positions, some more than others, but all positions.

My final thoughts on the draft has to do with who is making the picks. The new General Manager Brian Gutekunst is supposed to be in charge, but he evidently has no confidence in his abilities since he wants (needs) Ted Thompson to be in the room and at the table Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

After the decay of the Ted Thompson post Super Bowl years the one thing needed was for a new start, but instead Mark Murphy, who let Ted Thompson run the team without any supervision, is still the CEO, Mike McCarthy who kept Dom Capers way too long and hasn’t been a great play caller for many seasons, is still the head coach, and Brian Gutekunst is the new Ted Thompson, or actually the next Ted Thompson because Ted Thompson is still employed by Murphy.

All the talk about a new start was just bullshit. Ted Thompson should have been handed a gold watch and shown the door. Until he has left the building the Packers will never return to the Super Bowl. Just to be sure whatever happens tonight is not the 1st draft of the "Gute" era, but the 14th draft of the Thompson era.
