Position Evaluation: Secondary

Cornerback is the position former Head Honcho Ted Thompson (or is he, but more on that later) worked on the most in his final years and the position that was the least improved and the main reason, in addition to Dom Capers, the Packers defense sucked for the last several seasons.

Cornerback has been a major disaster after the loss of Tramon Williams and Sam Shields, despite being filled by three high draft choices. Thompson began to rebuild the unit by drafting Damarious Randall and Quinten Rollins No. 1 and No 2 in 2015 and then Kevin King No. 2 (he was actually Thompson’s top draft pick when he traded out of the 1st round) last season. In addition, he drafted Demetri Goodson No. 6 in 2014.

The Key to the Atlanta Falcons Game

The Packers will open the new Mercedes-Benz Stadiurm Sunday with a lot on the line for the second week of the season. The key to this game is the Packers defense and not whether Aaron Rodgers and the Packers offense can play a full game in sync.

I expect the Packers offense to play well, if David Bakhtiari plays. If he doesn’t and Adam Pankey has to start or Lane Taylor shifts over and Lucas Patrick starts at left guard or something else because General Manager Ted Thompson has left the Packers without a viable backup at left tackle then Rodgers and the offense will be in trouble.

However, that stupid injury on a celebration is not the real issue this week. The Falcons have a high powered offense with a decent offensive line and a bonafided star in Julio Jones unlike the Seahawks who had a wreck of an offensive line that Packers front seven dominated.

Roster Rumblings

Looking around the roster the Packers kept three quarterbacks and I have no problem with that because we don't know how healthy Brett Hundley is and Joe Callahan earned at least a few weeks on the 53 because he was the only one who provided the "WOW" moments during the preseason.

Almost Perfect

The game against the Raiders at Lambeau Field was almost a perfect outing. If you take away a play here or there and the injury to second string quarterback Brett Hundley the Packers played well both offensively and defensively.

 

First and utmost Brett Hundley is the real deal. When he gets healthy, if he does, (remember Ty Montgomery had an ankle injury and never recovered after the second hurting), will demand a pretty penny next year when Thompson trades him. He has to. Unless Hundley is going to push Aaron Rodgers out as the starter like Rodgers did it wouldn't be fair to have him sit. Favre was closer to retirement (hahahaha) than Rodgers is.
