FROM THE SUBLIME TO THE RIDICULOUS, PART wejmaH Soch

(Klingon just because)

NEITHER SUBLIME NOR RIDICULOUS JUST SAD

Once a Packer Always a Packer Al "Hoagy" Carmichael
Packers Hall of Famer (1974) Al Carmichael died Sept. 9, 2019 at the age of 90. He played for the Packers from 1953 to 1958 and was released by Vince Lombardi in his first training camp. He held the NFL-record for the longest kickoff (106) which he set against the Chicago Bears at old City Stadium on Oct. 7, 1956 until it was broken in 2007 by Ellis Hobbs of New England when he returned a kickoff 108 yards. He held the Packers record until Randall Cobb broke it in 2011 when he also returned a kickoff for 108 yards. When he left the Packers he held the NFL records for most career kickoff returns and most career kickoff return yardage. Well actually that is pretty SUBLIME.

First AFL Touchdown
He also set a milestone that would never be broke or duplicated when he scored the first touchdown in the old AFL. He signed with the Denver Broncos in 1960 and scored the league's first touchdown on a 59-yard catch on Sept. 9, 1960, on a pass from quarterback Frank Tripucka in a game against the Boston Patriots.

Come to think of it Al "Hoagy" Carmichael’s football career was not only SUBLIME but it was also SUMBLIMEST.

Side Note: Thinking of Carmichael’s nickname "Hoagy". My other passion beside the Packers and Packers lore is James Bond. I don’t know if any of you know that when creator Ian Fleming was asked who he thought James Bond resembled he said Hoagy Carmichael, a well known singer, songwriter and actor known for composing ‘Stardust’, ‘Georgia on my Mind’, ‘The Nearness of You’ and ‘Heart and Soul’. He is also known for playing Jonesy on the TV western Laramie.

Hoagy Carmichael
You can thank me later. $10’s and $20’s will be fine.

ALSO SAD

The Glory Years
Since I’ve been gone during my summer of reconstruction (having my right hip replaced and both cataracts removed and replaced (instead of 20/400 I am now 20/20 in both eyes) we lost Bryan Bartlett Starr. I can safely say there was no truer gentleman in football or any sport for that matter or as a person. God’s speed Bart. You were truly a treasure.

Bart and Cherry Starr the last time Bart visited Lambeau Field
SUBLIME

Legends
The Packers will hold their Bart Starr Celebration on September 14.

SUBLIMEREST

The 10-3 win over the Chicago Bears to open the season was significant for two SUBLIME reasons. Coach Matt LaFleur was the only first year coach of the eight to win his first game last week. And it took a good Packers defense to do it. Now that’s SUBLIME on two levels.

Vince Lombardi's First Win
The second SUBLIMEST is the 10-3 win over da Bears was only the second time any new Packers coach beat the Bears in the season opener since Vince Lombardi beat da Bears at Lambeau Field, 9-6, in 1959. Talk about good company to be in.

Some History: Mike McCarthy got blown out in his NFL debut in 2006 by da Bears 26-0 at Lambeau Field. The only other first time Packers coach who lost to da Bears in his first game was Ray McLean in 1958 at Lambeau Field, 34-20.

SUBLIMESTLY SUBLIME

Game Ball
Aaron Rodgers saved the last game ball to present to his new coach Matt LaFleur. No matter what people say it seems Aaron Rodgers either doesn’t hate his new coach or is not a dick. Well at least for one week.

RIDICULOUS

Aaron Rodgers - the quarterback who doesn’t need preseason games to be good OR MAYBE HE DOES - lost a beer chugging contest to David Bakhtiari at a Milwaukee Bucks game when he choked or more precise couldn’t drain his cup. In fact, Bakhtiari drained two full beers and Rodgers couldn’t finish his less than full first beer. Then Bakhtiari drained a third after Rodgers wimped out. Rodgers should have known never to take on an offensive lineman in a beer-drinking contest. Maybe he would have done better if he chugged some of Charles Woodson’s wine instead.

RIDICULOUSER

Game of Throws
Aaron Rodgers - the quarterback who doesn’t need preseason games to be good in an offense he doesn’t know - had a cameo in an episode of Game of Thrones. His moment in the sun lasted just a few seconds (I had longer scenes in my film debut in Escape from New York), but it was epic or was it ridiculous. You make the call.

I'm in the crowd
