The Black Hole of Brown County Doesn't Look So Black Unless You Want News from 1265 Lombardi Avenue |
I had hoped my campaign for the firing of General Manager Ted Thompson and now President Mark Murphy would be gaining steam, but I sincerely doubt it, so enough of unattainable missions, including winning a Super Bowl before the 2019 season and back to the real world outside of the Green Bay Packers Front Office or what is commonly known as the Black Hole of Brown County because information goes in and none comes out.
NFL fans of all stripes and animals can't wait for free agency to start after having to suffer through the Post-Super Bowl lull, but the only thing Packer Backers during the Thompson Era can hope for when they come out of our hibernation that starts three weeks before the Super Bowl most seasons and this year like most years see our shadows (Ray Drew and Jared Cook) and go back to sleep until the draft in two weeks is to harken back to the Good Old Days when men were men and women were glad of it.
I heard that somewhere. Actually the Good Old Days as far as Packers football is concerned is when the President and General Manager were worried more about winning championships than they were about saving money. In a world where bean counters are in charge championships are secondary.
A good example of what's happening in Packers Land was the Wednesday morning one-liners of Pro Football Talk of April 6 where they had these football related items about the Black and Blue Division.
The Vikings are taking a closer look at German WR Moritz Boehringer; The Lions like their competition at safety; At 187 pounds, Bears K Robbie Gould is one of the lightest players in the NFL; he’d like to get to 191, and as you can see Michael David Smith was forced to work overtime trying to come up with a Packer related item and here's what he came up with John Kasich tried to drum up votes in Wisconsin by saying he’d consider Packers QB Aaron Rodgers as his running mate.
Then on Thursday: Bears K Robbie Gould says he can sense a change in the organization. Might Laquon Treadwell be the guy to replace retired Lions WR Calvin Johnson? Vikings DE Brian Robison wants to play two more years. The Packers’ stingy approach to free agency is often good news for their own veterans.
On Friday: The Bears will see some familiar faces during the preseason. The Lions donated the equipment from their old workout room to the Detroit PAL. Vikings WR Charles Johnson is recovered from a rib injury and looking forward to the 2016 season. Some options for the Packers if they want a rookie wide receiver. (Who needs another receiver?)
Taking a look at the Sunday morning one-liners revealed the same thing: Kyle Long is happy to be at right guard for the Bears. The Lions expect more from RB Ahmeer Abdullah in his second season. Will the Vikings draft a cornerback? A look back at the career of retired Packers CB Herb Adderley.
And then the Monday morning one-liners of Apr. 11 was more of the same: Where can the Bears look to improve their defensive line in the draft? Exploring some Lions left tackle options. The Vikings found several contributors in the 2012 draft. On the Packers and the history of players selected No. 27 overall. Wow. A Black Hole indeed if you want any information about 2016.
You go to Packers.com, which is the absolute last place I go for Packers news, but even the Johnny Come Lately's who take too long to post anything there, are having trouble finding football related news. (If I was running Packers.com it would be the first place you go for breaking news instead of having to wait until the next day, if anybody is listening my phone number is.....). The main story was Construction of Titletown District's Lodge Kohler officially underway.
Ask Vic (who is so far up Thompson's ass he hasn't seen daylight since January 14, 2005) had these topics to chew on; Color rush uniforms: All green or yellow? Play or not play in the preseason? Best QB not to play in a Super Bowl? I would suggest to Vic he should have asked Best QB not to play in two Super Bowls? if he wanted something remotely related to the Packers.
On Packernet.com these were the topics du jour for April 5. From Packers News: Packers in rare fiscal air; Packers complete Titletown land purchase; Packers, Kohler have unique partnership; Packers QB Aaron Rodgers dings Kasich; Biggest offseason ‘addition’? It's Jordy Nelson and Game show looking for Aaron Rodgers super fans.
From Cheesehead TV: Green and Bold: Packers Must Have Offensive Line Contingency Plan (considering the only movement at those positions were the re-signing of reserve guard Lane Taylor and practice squad tackle Vince Kowalski); NFL Draft Scouting Report: Shilique Calhoun, OLB/DE, Michigan State. From Packers Talk: Green Bay Packers 2016 Draft: The Big Gamble. From 247 Sports: Aaron Rodgers trolls republican presidential candidate and Green Bay Packers complete land purchase for Titletown District.
We definitely live in the Black Hole of Brown County as far as actual team building news from mid January to mid April is concerned.
Well after poking my nose out on March 17 and seeing my shadow I went back into my cozy den and was content to sleep for another six weeks, but something woke me up early on April 5 and I thought maybe, just maybe Thompson had been fired or he pried open his wallet and spent some money on improving the Packers THIS year. But no such luck.
But when I checked the news here's what I found and none of its was earth shattering except the retirement of B. J. Raji, which was a not a good surprise.
Besides the re-signings of Letroy Guion, Mason Crosby, Lane Taylor, Nick Perry and James Starks; the running off of Raji; the loss of quarterback Scott Tolzien, cornerback Casey Hayward and outside linebacker Andy Mulumba in free agency and the release of inside linebacker Nate Palmer (all incestuous transactions) the only outside transactions were the signing of a cheap quarterback Ryan Williams, a cheap four-time loser defensive end Ray Drew and a cheap one-time loser tight end Jared Cook while totally ignoring the biggest hole on the roster at inside linebacker even though one of the top free agents wanted to sign with the Packers, but was never called.
So with nothing to gain I will go back to hibernating until April 28th to see if Thompson trades out of the No. 27 position to pick more cheap players instead of picking someone that might actually help the team TODAY as the clock keeps ticking on soon to be 33-year old Aaron Rodgers.
