The draft isn't over until it's over and then it really isn't over until the undrafted free agents are signed and as right now (Sunday night May 3rd) we have a list of the guys signed or about to be signed.
Malcolm Agnew |
First a break down of their positions. There were five wide receivers, four running backs, three linebackers, two guards, two defensive backs, a tight end, an offensive tackle and a nose tackle. In addition, there were seven players invited to the Rookie Camp for a tryout. Of those there was a quarterback, two offensive linemen, two defensive backs, a tight end and a defensive lineman.
I actually know one of the signees, running back Malcolm Agnew from Southern Illinois University. He is the son of Ray Agnew - an 11 year veteran who played defensive tackle for the Patriots, Giants and Rams - and the brother of fullback Ray Agnew III - who also played at SIU and had a tryout with the Browns and is now with the Cowboys.
John Crockett |
He was a solid running back before missing the final four games of the season with a torn ligament in his ankle. He elected to not have surgery and he recovered enough to compete in the NFL Players Association Collegiate Bowl. He played 19 games for the Salukis (after transferring from Oregon State) and rushed for 1,708 yards and 16 TDs. He averaged 5.4 a carry at SIU. He has speed and a second gear. While he is only 5-9, 207 he runs up the middle and can make cuts off the edge. He is also a good receiver out of the backfield. He was projected to be drafted in the sixth or seventh round and held a draft rating of 5.2.
Of the other free agents seven others had draft ratings. On offense there are running back John Crockett from N. Dakota State (5.1), quarterback Blake Sims from Alabama (5.0) - invited to Rookie Camp, tight end Mitchell Henry from Western Kentucky (4.9) and right offensive tackle Fabbians Ebbele from Arizona (4.8). On defense there are safety Ladarius Gunter from Miami (5.2), cornerback Bernard Blake from Colorado State (5.0) and outside linebacker James Vaughters from Stanford (4.8).
Ebbele (6-8, 315) is an interesting physical specimen very similar to former Packer Breno Giacomini (6-7, 318), who was a 2008 No. 5-150 draft pick that needed three seasons before he was able to master his unique height to become a solid starter for the Seahawks and is now the right tackle for the Jets.
The remainder of the undrafted free agents are: RB Raymond Maples, Army; RB Alonzo Harris, Louisiana; WR Javess Blue, Kentucky; WR Adrian Coxson, Stonybrook; WR Ricky Collins, Texas A&M Commerce; WR Jimmy Hunt, Missouri; WR Larry Pinkard, Old Dominion; G Marcus Reed, Fayetteville State; G Matt Rotheram, Pittsburgh; OLB Tavarus Dantzler, Bethune-Cookman; OLB Jermauria Rasco, LSU; NT Lavon Hooks, Mississippi.
Invited to Rookie Camp were T Jake Silas, Buffalo; G Andy Phillips, Central Michigan; TE Mitch King, Penn; WR Chris Mallett, Southeastern Louisiana; DE Josh Bredl, Colorado State-Pueblo; S Skye PoVey, BYU; CB J.D. Rousell, Sacred Heart (Conn.).
Bredl (6-7, 300) is another tall drink of water who could only hope to be compared to former Cowboy Ed "Too Tall" Jones (6-9, 271) when it's all over. He was invited to a private workout by the Broncos after the NFL Combine.
